چکیده

A recent study and review of the literature (Ford, 1960) provided no support for the view that the usual strains of genital pleuropneumonia-like organisms (PPLU) were a cause of non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU). It was noted, however, that Shepard (1956, 1957, 1960) had isolated morphologically distinct T-strain PPLO from the genital tract of patients with NGU, and that he believed these T-strain PPLO to be aetiologically related to the urethritis. The present work was undertaken to seek confirmation of Shepard's findings in a different geographical area.

Genital strains of human pleuropneumonia-like organisms.

Klieneberger-Nobel (1961) reviewed in detail the significance of large-colony pleuropneumonia-like organisms (PPLO) in the human genital tract. Unfortunately, at that time, the existence of T-strain PPLO, as described by Shepard (1956), was under dispute. Subsequently, however, Shephard's observation that T-strain PPLO could be isolated from the majority of patients with non-gonococcal urethrit...

The significance of pleuropneumonia-like or L organisms in non-gonococcal urethritis, Reiter's disease, and abacterial pyuria.

The first member ofthe group ofpleuropneumonia organisms was isolated by Nocard and Roux in 1898 from cases ofcontagious pleuropneumonia of cattle, a disease in which the essential pathological lesions are gross pulmonary cedema, pleural exudate, and arthritis. A similar organism was found by Bridre and Donatien (1923, 1925) in sheep and goats suffering from agalactia, a syndrome which includes...

Role of organisms of the pleuropneumonia group in human genital infections.

The isolation of organisms of the pleuropneumonia group from the human genital tract has aroused considerable interest in view of the attention now being paid to the aetiology of non-specific (non-gonococcal) urethritis. The first isolation of a pleuropneumonia-like organism from man was made by Dienes and Edsall (1937) from a Bartholin's abscess. Dienes and his associates (Dienes, 1940; 'Diene...

A Note on the Results of Cultural and Serological Tests for Pleuropneumonia-like Organisms

The isolation of pleuropneumonia-like organisms (PPLO) from the urethral secretions of patients with non-gonococcal urethritis has been reported by many workers and has led to the suggestion that they may be a possible cause of this condition, although they have also been found in the genital tract of apparently healthy males. Other organisms of the pleuropneumonia group are known to be associa...

Growth and development of T strain pleuropneumonia-like organisms in human epidermoid carcinoma cells (HeLa).

Previous investigations have demonstrated the existence of basophilic, intracytoplasmic inclusions in epithelial cells obtained from the anterior urethra of nongonococcal urethritis (NGU) patients (Johnston and McEwin, 1945; Harkness, 1945, 1950; Williams, 1946; Harkness and Henderson-Begg, 1948). Pleuropneumonialike organisms (PPLO) were frequently recovered in culture from these NGU patients ...
